Frame control
What is frame control?
First, a frame is about your image, appearance, and perception.
It is also about interpretation, how you view the world and your perspectives.
Now, control is about being in balance and maintaining these verbs. Just like control is also present in self-control. An unbalanced person, for example, does not show self-control.
You might wonder why there are two lines of verbs describing what a frame is. It is because how you are perceived is connected with your perspective. If you, for example, think something is cheap or don’t bother about money – chances you are being perceived as rich.
If you think somebody is complimenting you, then your image is probably that you are self-confident. A self-confident person believes in him or herself and that other people are there to help. When we talk about image and perception, both people will affect each other in a discussion. Your spoken words and perceptions will create a specific frame when you talk with somebody.
Suppose we look at the Compliment example. If you believe it to be irony or an assault, your frame isn’t as “good” as if you were to believe it was a genuine compliment. If, on the other hand, you took it as an insult. Then your image is more of a victim, or you have a victim frame since this is your perception.
In politics, there are often frame wars. Conflicts of which politicians have the better image. Since both politicians want to be the most brilliant, accurate, or logical, they often bash and disagree with each other’s image.
To simplify, others perceive your image or frame by how you talk. If you speak very accurately and precisely, your frame/image is described as an “accurate person.”. If you tell funny stories and make people laugh, you have a “funny frame”. But, if you tell a joke and think you are funny, but nobody else laughs, your frame is “not funny”.
There are tons of frames to have in social situations. The first ingredient is to believe in the frame yourself. This raises the odds for others to believe in you as well. Then you have to communicate in a way that gets the point across. It’s the same with roles.
Imagine you want to come off as a competent doctor. – Then, you talk confidently about medical topics. If you are NOT a doctor but pretend to be a doctor, you probably have a weak frame. If you ARE a very competent doctor, you have a strong frame. Being conscious of this mechanism is central to frame control.
If your frame, role or image Is that of a scientist, and somebody argues against your facts- then you will have a weak frame if they indeed have their facts in order and you don’t. Everybody does not consciously know some frames. For example, in dating, – The one who invests more or tries to impress the most is usually the most attracted.
Remember that frame describes the situation untold. For example, they comply if you are a boss at work and give orders to people. The frame is “You are the boss”. You don’t need to state this. People “get it” because of the untold mechanics.
As you might have understood by reading this far, expressing different attractive traits without stating them directly is possible. You have inner solid frames, meaning strong thoughts or convictions, AND being good with people, aka social intelligence.
This frame control becomes interesting if other people try to test or bug you. Let’s say you want to convey confidence, somebody tests you, and you snap. Then you don’t have all that much confidence, do you? There is a saying: “To have zero content and all facade”.
This saying is there because somebody only sells “hot air” and doesn’t have a track record. For example, if you claim to be a good climber, it HELPS to have climbed some mountains and be certified as a climber. As mentioned before, all kinds of frames exist out there. Since there are many, many ways people can perceive a situation.
Another example of a robust frame is the judge frame. The judge frame is when you act as a “judge”. When you are the one judging others, not the other way around, imagine you were a judge, and the person suspected starts to ask you the judge questions about your morality.
To be good in frame control. You have to experiment a little. One of the first skills you need to have is reframing. Have a more positive outlook to look at a situation and change your mind about it. Start by doing that within yourself before influencing others to view a situation. A final tip is that the truth is often the most potent friend.
